At least this time she hadn’t gotten up early; she’d made her junk food run last night, so she’d had enough to last her for days.

“So you’re pissed,” Jada said.

“I’m super, duper, angrily, grumpy,” Gianna huffed as she dipped her fourth beignet into raspberry sauce and stuffed half of it into her mouth as she stared at her computer screen.

“Well, that sounds really grown-up. What are you eating?”

“Bwn-wwyay,” Gianna answered.

“Gross! Don’t talk with your mouth full. Now tell me what really has you so fucking mad. Three days you were practically farting rainbows, so what’s wrong? I just e-mailed you more information on Rosie Ettabaum, so you should be all kinds of happy, not trying to eat your body weight in baked goods.”

Gianna picked up another one of Louisiana’s famous fried pieces of dough with powdered sugar. When she’d purchased them last night at Jimmy’s Po-Boy, Jimmy had known enough not to make a crack when she’d bought two dozen of the doughy bits of goodness with raspberry sauce and then asked where she could buy some Hershey’s chocolate syrup.

“I’m not mad. I’m happy. We have a lead.” She dipped her beignet into the cup of warmed chocolate sauce and took a big bite.

“I’m not buying this sunshine. The last time you were this upset was when you found out the guy you had been dreaming about for over a year in your knitwear design class was gay. Which I had been telling you from day one, I might add,” Jada smirked.

Gianna glared at the computer screen. It had been three days since Armand had caught Sebastian and her kissing in the kitchen, and since then she’d only seen Sebastian once in passing and he’d barely said one word to her. When she’d tried to get him off to the side to talk to him, he had side-stepped her. How were they going to work on the case if he wouldn’t talk to her? What’s more, how were they going to kiss again if they didn’t get an opportunity to be alone together?

“Gianna, talk to me. Tell me what’s wrong before you buy out the kid’s cereal aisle at the Piggly Wiggly. The last time you did that you didn’t come down off of the sugar high for thirty-six hours.”

Gianna glared at her computer. “It wasn’t that bad.”

“It so was. You ate a box of Fruity Pebbles, Fruit Loops, Trix, and two boxes of Apple Jacks. It’s amazing you didn’t go into a diabetic coma.”

“It was somewhat healthy. They all had fruit in them,” she mumbled.

“Tell me what’s wrong,” Jada demanded.

“Sebastian kissed me. Twice. They were the best kisses ever.”

“Girl!”

“But that’s not all. We, um…” Her voice trailed off.

“Girl!” This time, Jada’s voice was practically a growl. “You did the nasty?”

“And that was the best nasty ever.” She sighed. “But now he’s disappeared. There. Are you happy now?”

Gianna pushed back her computer from her lap and shoved the plate of food to the foot of the bed. She shot off the bed and headed to her closet.
